Hi, it’s Luke Zeven from Gentle Giant Massage. We’re located at 3 Main Road Willunga,South Australia, 5172. And in this post we’re talking about the importance of a good stretch.

Stretching is always good as long as you don’t hurt yourself doing it. It’s instinctive, it feels good, It loosens us up, we all do it and we all need to more of it. A good stretch can relive pain, ease tension and improve our mood. Our whole body is connected and no part should be neglected. Pulling back on your toes gets rid of a leg cramp. A hamstring stretch can cure a headache.

However no matter how long we stretch for, the same muscle will be tight again the next day. What would you do to get a stretch that lasts? Through the study of my Diploma of Remedial Massage I have learnt a technique called a Hold Relax Stretch. Another name for it is Muscle Energy Technique. The idea is to engage a muscle for about 8 seconds, relax the muscle then stretch it. You don’t need to hold the stretch for long and you don’t need to use a lot of strength when you engage the muscle. Start but lengthening the muscle like you would with a normal stretch, then with something to resist against contract the muscle using around 20% of it’s strength. Hold for 8 seconds, relax, then do the stretch. Hold the stretch for a couple of seconds then back off the stretch and repeat the process 2 or 3 times until the final resistance barrier has been reached (it won’t stretch any further).  This technique done correctly has been proven to result in a lasting stretch, so the next time you do it you will be able to stretch further. Increasing the muscles Range of Movement.
