What is Remedial Massage?

Remedial Massage

Hi, it’s Luke Zeven from Gentle Giant Massage. We’re located at 3 Main Road Willunga, on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia, 5172. In this post I’m talking about the definition of Remedial Massage and the difference between  Remedial and Therapeutic  Massage.

A lot of my clients ask me what remedial massage actually means. I give them a brief explanation during their treatment but I thought it would be a good idea to put it in a blog and expand further.

So what is Remedial Massage and what is the difference between remedial and Therapeutic Massage?

Remedial Massage is performed by highly trained professionals that have completed their Diploma of Remedial Massage. Within the diploma there is a Certificate IV in Therapeutic Massage. So we learn all about Therapeutic Massage before going on to complete our Diploma.

Therapeutic Massage largely comprises of Swedish Massage with light to medium strokes. This can be used in Relaxation Massage which is calming and feels nice. This can be good for relieving stress. A Therapeutic Massage Therapist should have a basic knowledge of muscles and tendons and where they attach to bones as well as knowing how to avoid causing harm with massage. Swedish Massage can be part of a Remedial Massage Treatment.

A Remedial Massage Therapist has a much broader knowledge of the muscular skeletal system as well as a basic knowledge of all the body systems. Remedial Massage Therapists can assess soft tissue injuries and employ a wide range of techniques to treat these injures. We can also asses and treat postural problems as well as determine other causes of pain such as muscle imbalances and of course tightness.

Health Funds offer rebates for Remedial Massage Treatments if the Therapist is registered with them. There is a full list of Health funds that I am resisted with on my website www.gentlegiantmassage.com. I also have HICAPS available for your convenience.

So if you are stressed and want a nice relaxing massage then a therapeutic massage will do the trick. On the other hand if you are sore and want relief go see a Remedial Massage Therapist.

In my Willunga clinic, as well as a thorough assessment and individualized Remedial Massage Treatment I offer the following specialized treatments:

  • Myofascial Therapy
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage
  • Sports Massage
  • Deep Tissue
  • Postural Alignment
  • Relaxation Massage
